MIHAI EMINESCU CENTRAL UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
Founded in 1835 as the library of The Mihaileanu Academy, Mihai Eminescu Central University Library in Iași is a cultural institution whose evolution has transformed it into a main component of the today's university life of Iași, playing its distinct role, in which its informative and formative functions intertwine with the priceless value of the thousands and thousands of tomes which it hosts in its collections.
Mihai Eminescu Central University Library was fonded by Vasile Lupu and Mihail Strudza. Having the rank of a national library, it has maintained its statute of "University library" ever since 1860.
The library has the role of constituting, organizing, processing, developing and preserving journals, articles, electronic publications as well as of creating the necessary informational framework in order to support the educational and research activity in the academic environment in Iași, extending it to a national and international scale.
Absorbing funds that were part of the former libraries of the princely academies, today's Mihai Eminescu Central University Library in Iași enjoys a continuity and a stability that have begun in year 1835, under the name of Mihaileanu Academy Library, changing along the year to : The University Library, The Ulpia Library, The Central Library.
The interior is made of Carrara marble and Venetian mosaic and the exterior is embellished with impressive ionic columns, neo-doric pillars, small triangular gables and sculptures of some of the most noteworthy personalities of our national culture.
Mihai Eminescu Library means tradition and continuity, an active informational and multilateral educational center, a place for valuing the priceless values of our nation.
