ST. JOSEPH'S CATHEDRAL
The cathedral was built during 1873 - 1884 according to the plans of architect Friedrich Schmidt from Vienna. The style of the building borrowed many Roman characteristics, combining them with some gothic elements.
It is the most renowned Roman-Catholic church in Bucharest, being at the same time an architectural monument. It is also known as a culture place - along the years, this is where many famous music concerts took place (organ or orchestra concerts, choir concerts or concerts of renowned artists).
The main altar of the cathedral was built in Rome out of white marble according to architect Friedrich Schmidt's plans, and then put into place in Bucharest by specialist Niccolo Orassi. The woodwork of the fake ceiling was made in Brasov.
The decorative painting of the central part of the cathedral was crafted by Georg Rider from Munchen, and painter Fr. Elsner was the author of the decorative painting of the baptistery chapel and of the lateral parts of the cathedral.
